Interesting Oppo Patent For Curved Screens

These days there are two very strong trends visible on the smartphone market: Almost bezel-less screens and curved displays. Though curved displays mostly aren’t of any use (the Samsung Galaxy Edge and S6 Edge are an exception), they indeed look quite stunning and thus are a very nice thing to have for all design fetishists. There is just a problem: Curved displays are more expensive than the flat ones we are used to, which probably is one of the reasons why we have not seen any Chinese manufacturer adopting this technology for now.

This could change now with a new patent coming from Oppo, aiming at making curved screens cheaper. The trick is that Oppo’s approach doesn’t really use a curved panel, but just makes it look like it is curved. They are using a curved glass combined with a non-curved LCD. Inside the curved glass there is some kind of lens and reflective material, that is projecting the picture displayed on the panel onto the edges of the glass, making it look like the LCD itself would be curved as well. This doesn’t only result in a lower cost for curved displays, it also makes devices look quite stunning, as the bezels aren’t visible anymore, hidden behind the curve.

For now it is totally unknown when Oppo will announce their first handsets making use of this technology, but we might actually see this inside the next Oppo flagship phone which will be the Find 9. Oppo will have a hard time creating something unique and outstanding this time, so their new screen technology would be a perfect addition to the next Oppo flagship.
