“The only thing Chinese companies can do is to copy the work of others” still is a sentence we hear rather often these days. Bu that’s not true, and there is a whole bunch of companies who proof exactly this again and again and again. Oppo is one of those companies. Take for example their rapid charging technology called “VOOC”. Using this technology, Oppo revolutionized fast charging on mobile devices and still is right on top with it today. VOOC has been used inside the Oppo Find 7 for the first time, where it managed to impress a lot of people, including us. It only takes 30 minutes to charge the battery from 20% to 70%. 100% takes just a little under one hour. Meanwhile Oppo incorporated VOOC into a bunch of other devices and even does offer a power bank supporting VOOC in both directions. It even seems like VOOC doesn’t hurt the batteries at all, as we have an Oppo Find 7a here which soon will get 8 months old yet doesn’t show any signs of battery aging. This is a good proof for the fact that oppo did good with VOOC.
But what does this have to do with the Android Wear smartwatch we are talking about in the headline? Well, one of the main issues with watches based on the Google operating system is their battery life. Todays smartwatches with Android Wear mostly do only last a day. Just a few devices can make it to 2 or 3 days. And that isn’t easy to change because battery technology isn’t developing fast enough. So we either need much more power saving SoCs and displays or a new battery technology that can take more energy while staying small. Or another workaround: Improving the time it takes to charge smartwatches.
And that’s exactly where Oppo comes to play. According to a new leak on Weibo by CDigital, Oppo is currently working on their very own Android Wear smartwatch which does support VOOC rapid charging. The leak doesn’t disclose anything about the watches hardware, but claims it to be able to fully re-charge within only 5 minutes while one charge will last you a full day. Now that does sound like a decent solution for todays wearables, and we can’t wait to know more about this one.
